The Academy at Shawnee, located in Louisville, Kentucky, has a rich and storied history. Here's an overview of its development and significance over the years:

Early Years and Establishment

  1. Founding:

    • The school building was constructed in 1927 and is on the National Register of Historic Places (reference number 84000277). Shawnee High School opened in 1928 as an all-girls school.  It became co-educational in 1950 and later became a magnet school with a focus on aviation. Recently, the school changed its name to The Academy @Shawnee. Our school is the largest high school in the school district (344, 000 square feet).

  2. Architecture:

    • The building was designed in the Collegiate Gothic style, famous for educational institutions during that era. Its architectural design reflects the importance placed on education and the community's ambition at the time.

At the Middle School level (6-8), students are exposed to explore pathways. Participating in the explore pathways expose students information they will need to select and excel in one of the three academies above. In middle school, students are assigned to teams (families) at each grade level. In addition, we take a middle school approach to teaching and developing young people.

At the High School, we have adopted block scheduling, which provides students with 90 minutes of instruction for each class period. Block scheduling allows for deeper learning and rich conversations, as well as gives our staff to enrich students' academic experiences. In addition, teaching in the block provides teachers with more time to individualize instruction to meet the needs of each scholar.

All in all, we have shared a few wonderful things about our school. By square footage, we have the largest high school campus in JCPS. We provide quality service to both middle and high school students. As you venture through our website, we hope you witness a school that cares deeply for its students, staff, and community. Have a wonderful day!!!
