Crosby sixth grader Ayla Duncan is a runner racking up accolades

By Dyuce Woodson

Nov. 6, 2023—Crosby sixth grader Ayla Duncan fell in love with running in an unusual way.

"Well, it's kind of a, like, a silly reason. Because my cousin used to be faster than me, so I wanted to be faster than her, but I thought distance was track, like, short distance," she said. "So, when I joined the cross-country team, I was really wrong but I still liked it. So, I just stuck with it."

It is a good thing she stayed with because she's earned multiple accolades, including being named an All-American and a district champion.

Admittedly competitive, she doesn't let physical limitations hold her back from being first.

"I've had one foot since I was born," she said. "I was born with no foot."

Duncan runs with a prosthetic leg on her right side. While she says it's a bit more of a challenge taking on terrain and hills, she doesn't make excuses.

"That doesn't stop me," she said.
