Cooper has served as Smyrna’s AP for eight years and said she is “honored” to step into the principal position and lead a team of dedicated and committed staff and students.

“I am excited to work closely with our exceptional team as we implement the new curriculums for literacy and math, ensuring every student receives the best education possible,” Cooper said. “I am thrilled to continue fostering a strong sense of belonging within our school community. Our foundation of care and support will remain unwavering, ensuring every student feels valued, included, and empowered to thrive.”

Cooper joined JCPS in 2005 as a substitute teacher and moved to Frayser Elementary School in 2009, where she worked as a kindergarten, third grade, and ECE resource teacher and Positive Behavior Intervention Coach. Cooper took the AP role at Smyrna in 2015 and helped oversee curriculum implementation, professional learning communities, and student behavior, among other priority areas.

“Ms. Cooper has worked collaboratively with staff and families to develop a caring, student-centered environment,” said Dr. Paige Hartstern, assistant superintendent of elementary schools, Zone 2. “Additionally, Ms. Cooper has demonstrated a deep commitment to the community of Smyrna Elementary. We are thrilled that she will be taking on this new challenge.”

Cooper earned her Rank I in Educational Leadership from the University of the Cumberlands, a Master of Science in Elementary Education with ESL emphasis from Indiana University Southeast, and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with LBD emphasis from the University of Louisville.

Smyrna Elementary focuses on nurturing the whole child, Cooper said, “fostering not only academic excellence but also tending to their social-emotional well-being.”

“I look forward to collaborating closely with all stakeholders to sustain a safe, inclusive, and enriching learning environment, where each child's potential is unlocked and celebrated,” she said.
