Coaches learned or completed recertification in CPR and AED Training

July 14, 2023—Alysha Buehler is the certified athletic trainer for Western High School, and last week, she reminded or taught coaches how to properly perform CPR and how to use an automated extended defibrillator (AED) machine — a device that’s used to shock a heart back into rhythm.
“I think it’s just really good to have that general knowledge, whether your child is in athletics or not,” Buehler said.”Just having that general knowledge is very important.”
While having all Jefferson County Public School (JCPS) coaches CPR-certified isn’t a new initiative, JCPS Director of Athletics Dr. April Brooks said there is added significance for more coaches to know how to use an AED machine.
“We’ve always had AED training, but we’re really making an emphasis since the safe sidelines forum,” Brooks said. “Because of House Bill 331, that we’re emphasizing more that we’ve got to make sure we know exactly where the AED is, how to get there, how to use it.”
Elizabeth Garnos is going into her ninth year as head dance coach at Westport Middle School. Learning this skill is always beneficial, she said.
“I think it gives the parent a good peace of mind,” Garnos said. “Some of the adults know that I can be there and can help and step in, if need be, and save those precious seconds.”
