June 26, 2023–Longtime educator Andrew Terry has been named the new principal at Norton Commons Elementary School and will begin in July.
Terry comes to JCPS from Anchorage Public School, where he had served as principal since 2016, and said he is thrilled to join a school with a strong academic tradition, hard-working staff, and fantastic family support.
“I am so excited to jump in and begin working with this incredible school community,” Terry said. “The opportunity is one that I do not take lightly, as I know there is a strong tradition to continue at Norton Commons.”
Terry brings 24 years of experience to the role. Prior to working at Anchorage Public School, he was an associate principal at Norton Oldham High School for 11 years. He also worked as a Spanish teacher at North Oldham High School and North Oldham Middle School.
Joe Leffert, assistant superintendent of elementary schools, Zone 3, said Terry’s student-centered approach will help build upon the strong foundation set at Norton Commons Elementary.
“Andrew Terry is a dynamic force who will work collaboratively with teachers, staff, students, and families to create an energized and enthusiastic learning community for all,” Leffert said. “With 24 years of experience in education and leadership, Mr. Terry brings a deep understanding of the academic, social, and emotional needs of students, which will drive his decision making.”
Terry earned a master’s degree in education and a bachelor’s degree in Spanish, both from the University of Kentucky. He also holds a graduate diploma in business administration from Indiana University Southwest.
In the short-term, Terry said he will work to get to know every person who impacts the Norton Commons community. Long-term, he wants to “build on the strong academic performance that has been established as well as continue to make this facility one that is world class to support both students and teachers.”
Terry called himself a “relationship builder” who supports all stakeholders in a way that removes barriers to help students achieve both individual and school-wide goals.
“Through building strong relationships and a culture of care, I believe that schools can then truly achieve unprecedented heights,” Terry said. “I know that I have some big shoes to fill, but I am ready for the challenge.”
