June 1, 2023–Dr. Jason Detre will become the next principal of Marion C. Moore School, bringing extensive experience as a middle and high school administrator to the role.
Detre, who currently serves as principal at Lassiter Middle School, said he’s excited to work at one of the only schools in the district that serves grades six through 12.
“I have a passion for both middle and high school students,” Detre said. “This is one of the unique schools in Kentucky where you get to do both roles.”
Detre has worked in education for more than 20 years and actually began his JCPS career at Marion C. Moore in 2019 as the assistant principal of curriculum and instruction. He transferred to Iroquois High School in January 2020, where he served as the assistant principal of curriculum and instruction and building and grounds, before leaving in 2022 to lead Lassiter.
“It is exciting to bring Jason Detre back as the new principal at Moore,” said Dr. Nathan Meyer, assistant superintendent of Accelerated Improvement Schools. “Dr. Detre is an instructional leader who will set the vision for the school and offer a caring and supportive environment for the students and the community…We know Dr. Detre is as eager as we are to begin our shared work this summer.”
Detre earned a Doctorate from the University of Cumberlands in Educational Leadership and a Rank I in Educational Administration, a Master of Arts in Special Education, and Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Education, all from Western Kentucky University.
He has held positions in North Spencer Schools Corporation in Indiana, and Nelson, Spencer, Hancock, LaRue, and Jefferson counties in Kentucky. He also works as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Campbellsville in the Principal and Internship and Instructional Supervision program and the University of the Cumberlands teaching science methodologies.
Detre’s “vast array” of experience in middle and high schools and district-level administrative roles will help him as he steps into this new leadership position, he said. He also noted his strength in curriculum and instruction and relationship-building.
At Marion C. Moore, Detre said he will prioritize making sure all students are on grade level in reading and math and that high school students graduate college or career ready. He also will focus on getting as many students as possible to participate in school extracurricular events or co-curricular events.
Detre said he will “deeply miss” his colleagues and students at Lassiter.
“To my new group, I’m excited to be back and get started,” he said.
