April 25, 2023 - The interim principal at Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School has been appointed to the permanent job. Rhonda Hedges has been serving as King’s interim principal since February.
“I cannot begin to express the joy I have for joining the wonderful staff at King Elementary School,” Hedges said. “Since I’ve been at King, the support for our students from the staff and community has been overwhelming."
During her short time at King, Hedges has focused on improving communication with staff and families, creating targeted instructional practices, and working with teachers on strategies to assist students when they display negative behaviors.
“We are excited to make Rhonda Hedges our permanent principal at King Elementary,” said Dr. Nate Meyer, assistant superintendent for Accelerated Improvement Schools (AIS). “Principal Hedges made an immediate impact on King as an interim leader, and we expect progress to continue going forward. She is a student advocate for each child and will lead with a student-centered mindset while supporting staff and families.”
Hedges was previously a principal at the Alfred Binet School, which serves students with moderate to severe disabilities. She has taught in JCPS and Bullitt County Public Schools classrooms and has been an adjunct professor at Bellarmine University and the University of Louisville. Before being appointed as interim principal at King, Hedges was an assistant principal at Wheatley Elementary School. She’s now looking forward to making King “a model school for student achievement.”
“The staff at King has been committed to a positive culture and climate to create a learning environment that is conducive to high-level engagement,“ Hedges said. “I look forward to cultivating these relationships and making King Elementary a model school for student achievement. I am ready for this adventure and excited to be part of this fantastic work where all students have a sense of belonging at King Elementary School.”
