FCHS was the first high school to open in Jefferson County

On a cold March morning, students, staff, alums, and Fern Creek High School supporters gathered outside the building to celebrate the school's 100th anniversary.
"This school community is incredible, and it truly is a family," said Dr. Rebecca Nicolas, principal of Fern Creek High School. "I feel incredibly privileged to represent our school for the start of our 100-year anniversary."
When Fern Creek High School opened in 1923, it was the first high school in Jefferson County and enrolled 25 students. The school was built of red brick and comprised only four rooms. Today, nearly 1800 students are enrolled at Fern Creek High School.
"Our school and our community share a unique history and relationship. "Fern Creek High School is a place where tradition meets today," said Rev. Michael Gatton, a member of the Fern Creek High School Alumni Association. "Fern Creek High School is a place that has demonstrated that diversity strengthens community."
During the celebration, students unveiled a special highway marker in front of the school, and March 13, 2023, was declared Fern Creek High School 100 Year Anniversary Celebration Day.
"Fern Creek High School has not only been a place for learning but a gathering place and source of pride for the entire Fern Creek community," said Dr. Marty Pollio, Jefferson County Public Schools superintendent. "Fern Creek is a fantastic school, and there is no doubt in my mind that 100 years from now, it will continue to be a great school."
